Downtime Continues for Carmakers as Chip Shortage Carries On

Automakers are still grappling with the chip shortage, cutting production time down and giving up on getting those vehicles back this year — however, not all the closures are semiconductor related.

Ford Motor Co. plans to resume production Sept. 20 at an assembly plant in Flat Rock, Michigan, which closed earlier this month after a leak of toxic material into the local sewer system forced hundreds of residents from their homes near the plant. 

Ford confirmed by e-mail the company agreed to pay each owner of the 1,100 homes impacted by the spill $500 to cover expenses incurred when they had to leave their homes near the plant south of Detroit. The Flat Rock plant currently builds the Ford Mustang is the only Ford plant building traditional passenger cars. 

GM extends shutdown at Orion

General Motors, meanwhile, said it is extending the shutdown of its assembly plant in Orion Township, north of Detroit, where it assembles the all-electric Chevrolet Bolt through Oct. 15. GM originally closed the Orion plant at the end of August after expanding the recall of the Bolt due to potential battery fires. 

GM has now targeted 140,000 Bolts, including the latest models, for recall, which could involve replacing the battery packs. The extension of the layoffs at the Orion plant indicates GM and its South Korean partner, LG Energy, which manufactured the battery, have not yet come up with a satisfactory fix for curing the defect in the batteries.

GM also extended the shutdowns at two Lansing, Michigan plants, the CAMI plant in Ingersoll, Ontario and two plants in Mexico — Ramos Arizpe and San Luis Potosi — due to the continuing shortage of semiconductors. The Lansing plants will be down the week of Sept. 27 while the other plants will stay shuttered through the week of Oct. 11, GM said.

“These most recent scheduling adjustments are being driven by the continued parts shortages caused by semiconductor supply constraints from international markets experiencing COVID-related restrictions,” said David Barnas, GM spokesman, in an email to TheDetroitBureau.com. 

“We remain confident in our team’s ability to continue finding creative solutions to minimize the impact on our highest-demand and capacity constrained vehicles. Although the situation remains complex and very fluid, GM continues to prioritize full-size truck production which remains in high demand.”

The tights supply of semiconductors, which has prevailed all year, also prompted Stellantis to extend the shutdown of its plant in Belvedere, Illinois, which is used to build the Jeep Cherokee.

IHS cuts outlook for future production

IHS Markit said this week it was cutting its global light vehicle production schedule forecast by 6.2% or 5.02 million units in 2021. In an indication it expects shortages to continue, IHS also said it was reducing its forecast for 2022 by 9.3% or 8.45 million units in 2022. 

“For 2023 we have reduced the forecast by 1.05M units or 1.1% to 92M units; this is a front-loaded adjustment and from the second quarter we expect output levels will be able to accelerate as supply chains return to normal,” IHS said in a statement. 

Stellantis still faces strike threat

Stellantis also is continuing to face pressure from a strike at an axle plant operated by ZF, which supplies axles for Ram trucks and Jeep SUVs. The issues around the strike at the plant in Marysville, Michigan have not been resolved, United Auto Workers officials said. 

The strike over union recognition has left unionized portion operating more or less normally under an existing labor pact. However, workers seeking to have the UAW recognized as there bargaining agent have set up picket lines at the new plant, which was set up after ZF bought out an existing operation — and labor contract — from Fiat Chrysler.

CEO Tavares Giving 14 Stellantis Brands a Chance to Prove Their Worth

The merger of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles and the PSA Group created an automotive powerhouse now called Stellantis, but it’s also produced a jumble of 14 individual brands. And CEO Carlos Tavares says each of them will have to prove their worth — though he’s giving them time to do so.

Even before the merger there was widespread speculation that some FCA brands might be on the chopping block due to declining sales. But the merger adds a layer of complexity, especially at a time when Stellantis must pick up the pace of its electrification and mobility services programs.

As an executive known for moving quickly, Tavares seems to be in no rush, however. Instead, he appears to be willing to let all 14 of the Stellantis brands lay out plans and prove they’ll work.

Showing the love

“For the time being, we love them all,” the Portugese-born executive said during a webinar sponsored by Automotive News.

“Each (individual brand) CEO has 10 years for which I am telling him or her that he has the funding, the ability to build his long-term business plan and plan for the different product launches and technologies to make the brand grow or rebound and create value for the company.”

Smoke and mirrors won’t help the Dodge brand make the cut in the long term.

Post-merger, Stellantis has more individual automotive brands than any other company, even Volkswagen’s dozen. The list includes a handful of truly global marques, such as Jeep, but most focus on specific markets or regions. Ram is largely limited to the Americas, while Peugeot and Citroen abandoned North America back in the 1990s. Some, like Jeep, have posted dramatic growth in recent years. Others, including both Fiat and Chrysler, are struggling.

A troubled future for two namesakes

In fact, the two namesake Fiat Chrysler marques have been teetering on the edge almost since the day FCA was formed a decade ago. Former CEO Sergio Marchionne had largely shifted focus — and resources — to two Italian brands, Alfa Romeo and Maserati. But the grand plan the late Marchionne laid out has yet to pay off despite billions of dollars spent on new products.

When the FCA-PSA merger plans were announced in 2019 many analysts thought that a retrenchment was inevitable. And they pointed to Tavares, who was designated to become Stellantis CEO, as someone unwilling to tolerate ongoing losses.

But the 62-year-old executive has also shown a willingness to give struggling brands a second chance. That became apparent when PSA completed the acquisition of long-struggling Opel-Vauxhall in 2017. The German-based manufacturer had lost billions under the ownership of General Motors during the prior two decades. Yet Opel wound up back in the black within the first year it was run by Tavares.

Whether he can pull off a similar turnaround with the other Stellantis brands is far from certain. Fiat and Chrysler are clearly going to be the most trouble, according to analysts. The U.S. marque now offers only two models, the aging 300 sedan and the Pacifica minivan, not much on which to base a brand. Fiat’s U.S. turnaround fell flat and it is barely hanging on there. It’s continued to lose ground in its home European market, as well.

Dodge isn’t in much better shape. It does have a loyal following for its Charger and Challenger muscle cars, as well as the Durango SUV. But it will have to adapt to a world in which electric drivers, rather than supercharged Hellcat V-8s, rule the road.

Alfa and Maserati are still works in progress but have yet to deliver the sort of sales and earnings numbers Marchionne predicted at an FCA investors seminar shortly before his untimely death in July 2018. Both brands are making major changes to their product programs, among other things, increasing focus on electrification.

Only Jeep and Ram, of all the FCA brands, have a strong and clearly identified path laid out for them. But both must also adapt to an electrified future.

Europe has its own issues

The French Stellantis brands appear to be a bit better positioned than their Italian and American counterparts, but Peugeot, Citroen and DS have their own challenges, especially when it comes to entrenching themselves in China, the world’s largest automotive market. And, shortly after the FCA-PSA merger was completed this year, Tavares called off plans to return Peugeot to the American market.

Stellantis instantly became the world’s fourth-largest automaker based on vehicle sales once the deal was completed. But it lags behind its three largest competitors, Volkswagen Group, Toyota and the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance, in some key categories. That includes not only a weak presence in China, but also a slow push into both battery and autonomous vehicle technologies.

It appears that Tavares is looking to give each Stellantis brand enough time to define the path forward, rather than racing to cut them out of the family.

Stellantis Enjoys Warm Welcome from European Investors

Not every merger involving an automaker these days involves a blank-check company. The newly minted tie-up between Fiat Chrysler Automobiles N.V. and Peugeot S.A. was finalized over the weekend and the resulting company, Stellantis N.V., is enjoying a warm welcome.

At least on the stock market.

The new company’s stock trades on three exchanges and it finished the day on the Paris exchange up nearly 7%, closing at €13.14. It also jumped up 7.7% on the Milan exchange.

The New York Stock Exchange, the third exchange it’s traded on, was not open today due to the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday.

CEO Carlos Tavares has a lot on his corporate plate now that the merger is complete.

The $52 billion merger of near equals creates a massive enterprise with operations on six continents, employs about 400,000 people, sells – at least for the time being – 14 vehicle brands and sells 8.1 million vehicles annually, making it the fourth-largest automaker in the world behind Volkswagen, Toyota and the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance.

With all of those possibilities, it’s going to take a press conference Tuesday to start revealing what Stellantis will look like now that’s it’s a living, breathing entity. What brands will stay? How many workers will keep their jobs?

People are nervous because the CEO of the new enterprise, Carlos Tavares, has a history of being fearless when it comes to eliminating unprofitable operations and processes in the pursuit of corporate profit. One need only look at how what he did with former General Motors’ subsidiary Opel. A money-loser for a decade, he had it in the black in one year.

“Stellantis faces a mixed outlook as U.S. stimulus plans may buoy Chrysler vs. a more uncertain outlook for Peugeot in Europe,” Michael Dean, BI automotive analyst told Bloomberg. “Former PSA CEO Carlos Tavares takes the helm and, similar to his handling of PSA’s takeover of Opel in 2017, we anticipate a new strategy in the first 100 days of his stewardship. All regions face a difficult 1H amid continued lockdowns.”

Quirky name aside, investors gave Stellantis a warm welcome when it began trading Monday.

The two companies have worked to allay fears of major cutbacks in France and Italy. While top managers have outlined plans to trim costs by $6 billion following the merger, they insist they will be able to do that without closing any plants. They have outlined 40% of those cost savings coming from purchasing, 40% from combining product development efforts, and 20% from marketing and other operations.

However, it’s unclear how Tavares plans to tackle other issues such as improving the company’s performance in China, the world’s largest automotive market, and bolstering its electrification efforts, especially in the aforementioned China as well as in the U.S. Just addressing those two issues are likely to require billions of dollars and euros. Some of plans for these things and more may get touched on Tuesday, Marco Santino, a partner at consulting firm Oliver Wyman, told Reuters.

“He has proven to be the kind of person who prefers action to words, so I don’t think he will make loud statements or try to over-sell targets,” he said.
